What's your job?

Within the Process Modelling and Fluid Dynamics group of the Ironmaking, Steelmaking & Casting department we are looking for a (principal) researcher in the field of experimental and analytical modelling of heat and mass transfer processes in steel production. The group uses state of the art water models and measurement techniques (PIV, UDV, image analysis) to capture flow phenomena in ironmaking, steelmaking, casting and coating operations. 

You will strengthen our team, and will work in multidisciplinary projects to improve process and product quality in various areas of the steel production route, ranging from coal beneficiation to coating applications, with an emphasis on the steelmaking and casting area.

R&D is a matrix organisation and the recruited will work in multi-disciplinary teams for various projects for both NL and UK based business units. You will also take part in external collaborations related to enhancement of existing modelling tools and development of new applications.  

You have an innovative mindset and will set up experimental and modelling research activities from proposal to plant implementation and product application as part of our suite of steel products in the market.

As a company expert, you are involved in the main research projects of Tata Steel. You will work in close cooperation with prominent researchers from various disciplines and in an open, international and academic culture with highly motivated colleagues.

Is this you?

  • A Principal Researcher having obtained a Master in one of the following field: (Applied) Physics; Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar
  • You should have experience with experimental modelling of fluid flow, including advanced measurement techniques (mandatory).
  • You have the ability to develop analytical models (Excel, Matlab) and image processing tools in Matlab.
  • Some knowledge of steelmaking processes is welcomed, but not mandatory.
  • You have project management, teamworking and communication skills
  • You are customer orientated and have a great degree of curiosity
  • An analytical approach is an important competency for the job
  • You will use your influencing skills to establish support for key projects. Your role requires you to keep abreast of developing technologies and using your own knowledge to develop applications for such technology for both continuous and breakthrough improvement

You will be part of a larger team of approx. 12 numerical and experimental modellers. And work in close collaboration with one colleague on FEM. The group is part of the Ironmaking, Steelmaking and Casting department (approx. 60 fte) of Tata Steel R&D (350-400 fte)
