What's your job?

As principal researcher you will develop and apply specialist knowledge of process technology in the field of blast furnace and alternative ironmaking processes. The work will serve the Tata Steel ironmaking processes in Europe (UK and The Netherlands) as well as in India. You will set up experimental and modelling research activities from proposal to plant implementation to drive innovation. As an ironmaking (company) expert, you are involved in the main research projects of the production of hot metal. You will work in close cooperation with prominent researchers from various disciplines and in an open, international and academic culture with highly motivated colleagues.


You will become member of the knowledge group “Blast Furnace Development & Alternative Ironmaking”. This group focuses on the expertise of hot metal production by means of the blast furnace process or alternative processes. The aim is to optimise the production process in order to guarantee a constant high hot metal quality and ongoing cost reduction. This is done by laboratory tests, process data analysis, in-situ measurements and simulation using physical and mathematical models (CFD and DEM).


You will strengthen the team of process development specialists, and will work in multidisciplinary projects to improve processes in various areas of the ironmaking production route, ranging from coal and coke, blast furnaces to the HIsarna applications. The main tools you will be using are mathematical models such as DEM and general process models. For this, modelling experience and knowledge of programming is required. To successfully apply these models an thorough understanding of the relevant processes is indispensable. You will cooperate with CFD developers in the R&D matrix.

Relevant subjects are blast furnace process, charging, hearth, tapping, the behaviour  of raw materials (coke, sinter and pellets) and chemical and physical processes in blast furnace as well as alternative iron making processes like HIsarna, Finex and rotary hearths.

Is this you?

  • A Principal Researcher having obtained an academic M.Eng or MSc./PhD degree, preferably in physical technology, chemical technology, metallurgy, applied earth sciences or mechanical engineering;
  • You should bring a proficient level in process research;
  • You have experience in modelling (DEM, CFD) and programming;
  • You have affinity to study processes in a heavy industry environment;
  • You have project management and team working skills;
  • You are customer orientated and have a great degree of curiosity
  • An analytical approach is an important competency for the job
  • You will use your influencing skills to establish support for key projects. Your role requires you to keep abreast of developing technologies and using your own knowledge to develop applications for such technology for both continuous and breakthrough improvement
