The production of steel strip from slab requires that the product is heated prior to hot rolling and after cold rolling, these heating processes are called reheating and annealing respectively. The reheating and annealing process and its control are key in obtaining the targeted microstructure and product properties. Your state-of-the-art knowledge in these fields leads to improved product quality and productivity, and reduced process costs, energy consumption and emission of environmentally harmful substances.
You will utilize and implement these models and control systems to optimize the production of steel strip and optimize the energy flows in the steel production process. You will work in various research and development projects, in which you execute research work in close cooperation with colleagues. For this purpose, you have an excellent knowledge of furnace and combustion technology, fundamentals of heat and mass transfer, advanced process control, and you can translate this to practical applications for the production of steel strip.
Your good communication skills will be vital to inspire and convince others. You publish your results and conclusions via internal R&D reports and external publications at conferences and in scientific journals. You are a team player who works together with both researchers and plant technologists. Your R&D network will consist of researchers from inside and outside Tata Steel, in which especially your collaboration with academia and other companies is beneficial to Tata Steel. Next to that, you have a network with technologists in product development and in Tata Steel’s flat product mills. You pick up new opportunities, for example from conferences, a literature study or discussions within your network. You translate these opportunities into new project proposals and are able to lead research projects.

The department Rolling, Finishing & Measurement is responsible for technological innovations in the field of steel strip production by optimizing existing technologies as well as developing new technologies. The department focuses on process technology to produce strip from steel slabs. Its target is to enable Tata Steel’s flat product mills to improve in quality, flexibility and costs.
The knowledge group Thermal Processes is part of the Rolling, Finishing & Measurement department and focuses on improvements of existing and developments of new thermal processes for steel strip production. Major topics of interest include heat transfer to heat and cool steel, advanced control techniques such as model predictive control, and metallurgical phenomena in steel and during the heating and cooling process in the associated installations, including the surface reactions (oxidation-reduction) occurring during these thermal processes.
