At the coil packing line, a robot is placing straps around coils. These coils are tightly fastened and removal of these straps can be challenging. Therefore, the customer can order spacers; an accessory to create a gap between the coil and the strap. This spacer will make sure that the cutting tool of the customer will not create surface defects and to improve a save work action when the straps are removed. However, it has happened that spacers under the straps go missing or are badly positioned leading to surface defects, a possible safety issue and possibly customer complains. For a higher accuracy, the current human based quality check will be replaced with a machine vision application and/or a self-learning algorithm to automatically detect spacers. With that regards, efforts have already been spent on making sure that the images have a reasonably good quality in order to optimise object detection.
Your first challenge will be to make a decision on the most appropriate machine vision approach. Then you will develop the algorithm (which could be deep learning for example) and collect all necessary data to train / test the algorithm. This development will be done together with local plant experts and R&D experts.
We offer you a paid internship with proper guidance. You will gain valuable experience within a large organization in a typical R&D development activity. You will work in a running R&D project together with Tata Steel colleagues, both from R&D and manufacturing plants. We encourage trainees to regularly visit Tata Steel production plants to gain even more experiences.
Through this experience, you will acquire technical knowledge and skills needed in an R&D environment. During your training period you can regularly participate in events such as student tours and lunch lectures.
The Rolling, Finishing & Measurement (RFM) is a department of Tata Steel Research & Development and is based in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. RFM initiates industrial innovations for the processing of steel strip products by optimising existing and developing new technologies. You will be part of a RFM team responsible for developing new measurement technologies for Tata Steel Europe in the area of camera inspection systems, machine vision applications, x-ray, acoustic, and infrared imaging.
