Blast furnace is the most widely used route of ironmaking in the world. Hot metal iron is made by a counter-current process where iron oxides are reduced by coke, aided by the injection of pulverised coal in recent times. The process is accompanied by the release of gas as by-product from the top of the blast furnace. Top gas contains dust in different compositions and fractions and is separated in a dust catcher and wet scrubber. The slurry from the wet scrubber is treated in a water treatment plant to reclaim dust/ fines for recycling. Treatment of dust is an energy intensive process that creates problems in the handling of waste. Dust generation is influenced by many factors such as top gas velocity, type of burden, burden charging protocol, fuel combustion efficiency and gas permeability.
The internship is part of project on dust minimisation and control DuMiCo, aims to sample and analyse dust physically and chemically to obtain dust fingerprinting. DuMiCo is an RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel) project to study dust minimization and control to identify source of dust generation in the process of ironmaking. The study encompasses chemically formed dust to gain knowledge on source, mitigation and strategies to employ for stable operation in blast furnace.
In this internship, you will perform dust sampling and characterisation that includes grain size distribution, chemical analysis, reactivity analysis etc., to identify dust generation mechanisms and correlation to blast furnace process. Apart from dust analysis, the study also involves the analysis of carbon bearing input in the burden , i.e., coke and coal to examine dust origin.
The study provides opportunity to expand professional knowledge and skills by closely coordinating with the departments of blast furnace, chemical analysis and ceramics research centre.
You are following a Master in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering (mandatory)
You have a valid driving license (preferation)
You have a proficiency in Dutch language (preferation)
We offer you a paid internship (€347 per month) with proper guidance. You will gain valuable experience within a large organization in a typical R&D development activity. You will work in a running R&D project together with Tata Steel colleagues, both from R&D and manufacturing plants. We encourage trainees to regularly visit Tata Steel production plants to gain even more experiences.
Through this experience, you will acquire technical knowledge and skills needed in an R&D environment. During your training period you can regularly participate in events such as student tours and lunch lectures.
Tata Steel is one of the leading producers of steel, with operations in 26 countries and commercial offices in over 35 countries. The company is the second largest steel producer in Europe with a diversified product portfolio in flat and construction products for markets worldwide including automotive, energy and power, lifting and excavating, construction and packaging. With a mission to build the leading European steel business that is sustainable in every sense, this integrated steel company strongly emphasises on improving the efficiency of ironmaking and steelmaking by performing state-of-the-art research in fields like CO2 reduction and capture, raw material efficiency, circular economy.
