Pilot scale iron ore pelletising
The Ferrous Raw Materials research group within Tata Steel Europe R&D is looking for a trainee to assist with a deep dive into the experimental data collected from over one hundred pilot scale tests of firing iron ore pellets.
Iron ore pellets undergo a firing process in a packed bed to achieve sufficient strength to be loaded into the blast furnace without degradation. At the pilot plant of Tata Steel IJmuiden, a measure known as “effective firing time” has been used to assist in the analysis of the temperature profiles at different levels within the bed from pilot scale pot-grate tests. It takes the form of an integral to indicate the amount of heat received in the bed in relation to a reference temperature. The effective firing time used to correlate well with the strength of the fired iron ore pellets, but changes in the pellet firing process in recent decades means that the correlation has become less accurate.
Work has started on potential corrections to the effective firing time to restore the correlation with strength but a deeper analysis of historical testwork is now required to determine and validate the best option. The solution will be applied in the pellet plant to optimise future energy usage and minimise carbon emissions.

We offer you a paid internship with proper guidance. In consultation with you, we start with drawing up your assignment to make sure that it fits the requirements of your university. You can gain valuable experience within a large organization and Dutch only manufacturing industry. You can count on a no-nonsense and result-oriented organization, within which you can make a concrete contribution to the realisation of improvement objectives.
During your training period you can regularly participate in events such as student tours and lunch lectures. We also offer the possibility to make use of our Library Services. When you are in your final Master of Bachelor internship, you can temporarily become part of our internal Association for young professionals "The Magnet".
The internship will be based in the Ironmaking, Steelmaking and Casting Department of Tata Steel Europe R&D, which is host to a large and diverse group of researchers and trainees. There will a great opportunity to learn more about ironmaking and the world in the coffee corner or over lunch in our on-site canteen.
