Performance dashboard for Continuous Annealing Temperature Control

What's your job?

Over the past decade, Tata Steel R&D has developed its own software to monitor, predict and control steel strip temperatures in the continuous annealing and hot dip galvanising lines of Tata Steel Europe. As of 2019, the software, names OSCAR, has been successfully implemented in four production lines, with a fifth in progress and two more foreseen by 2021. Each of the four implementation has led to an increase in productivity and a decrease in energy consumption and rejected material fractions.
Since OSCAR uses models of the production lines to optimise their control, the accuracy of the models is key for the effective performance of the software. Model flaws that lead to production errors translate to significant costs in terms of lost productivity and/or, especially when summed over a year of production in four production lines. It is therefore vital that the performance of the software and the production lines is monitored on a systematic and regular basis, such that deteriorations can be identified and corrected in the earliest possible stage.

Details of the assignment
The primary goal is to develop a dashboard tool that can be used by the project leader and support engineers to monitor the performance of the production lines in general and OSCAR in particular. To this end, a number of Key Performance Indicators will have to be evaluated and displayed at a regular interval, such that they are available on at least a daily basis. The dashboard shall retain historical data so that decrease in performance can be adequately detected and reported. Finally, the dashboard shall offer the possibility to generate status reports of the OSCAR performance.
The first goal is to develop a beta version of the dashboard, which carries the required functionalities but does not need to be accessible to all end users. These functionalities include: data retrieving from external OSCAR servers, computation and visualisation of Key Performance Indicators, and report generation. Depending on the length of the internship, a full version can be developed, preferably in Delphi, which can be run as a standalone application by multiple users and can be easily maintained by the owner of the dashboard software.

Is this you?

  • This project would be best suited to Master Students with a technical background.
  •  Although the OSCAR software is based on control engineering techniques and thermophysical models, the purpose of the dashboard is mostly managerial and the assignment is therefore also considered suitable for candidates with an background in business and management.
  • The assignment is designed for a 3-6 months duration.
  • Good communication skills and eager to learn.
