Do you want to implement correlative microscopy for automated dust particle analysis of iron- and steel-making processes?

What's your job?

As a mineralogist/materials scientist your primary tasks will be implementing automated particle analysis (specifically of fugitive industrial dust) using correlative microscopy (optical 3D microscopy, SEM-BSE and Spectral Imaging Phase mapping). You will be working in a team with an SEM specialist and are responsible for optical microscopy. Capacity should be developed for characterization of up to 100 samples per week. Extensive knowledge of the actual industrial dust materials is not required. On the longer term you will be leading in automation of optical metallography rendering material data sets suitable for Advanced Analytics of our production processes.

You will always work in a team environment and discuss your research in thematic cluster- and project-meetings.

Is this you?

  • An academic level at Masters or PhD in Materials Science, Mineralogy, Petrology or applied Microscopy Materials Characterization;
  • Proven abilities in Image Analysis and Machine learning;
  • Practical skills in Correlative Microscopy of optical, electron and Spectral Image data are a prerequisite;
  • Experience with ZEISS ZEN software, ImageJ, or R are expected;
  • You should be able to plan and execute your research activities;
  • Further good communicative skills, a sound customer service orientation and excellent co-operation in (project)teams are required;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.

What's your department?

The Knowledge Group Process & Product Materials Characterization (MSC) performs microstructural analysis of materials, as well as experimental studies of kinetics and phase equilibria, to explain material behavior at process conditions as well as product performance. MSC hosts state-of-the art equipment and top-experts in Scanning Electron Microscopy/EDS/EBSD, EPMA, XRD for powder Diffraction, Texture and high-T research, as well as Thermal Analysis (TGA-MS-GC), and gas mixing furnaces. MSC forms part of the MCP department, assisting all other R&D departments with research, as well as the Centers of Expertise for Refractories and Steelmaking and for Raw Materials.

Tata Steel Research & Development (R&D) is a multi-site business employing around 400 employees within its three core technology centres: IJmuiden in the Netherlands and South Wales and Warwick in the United Kingdom. The MCP department combines top class experimental facilities for pilot manufacturing and state-of-the-art analytical technology in order to deliver ‘research solutions’ in a constantly changing world.
