Over the past decade, Tata Steel R&D has developed its own software to monitor, predict and control steel strip temperatures in the continuous annealing and hot dip galvanising lines of Tata Steel Europe. As the final mechanical properties depend critically on the microstructure evolution in the annealing furnaces, accurate strip temperature control is essential in ensuring a product of good and homogeneous quality.
Unfortunately, due to product inhomogeneities arising in earlier process steps, good temperature control is not enough to ensure a perfect product. In order to improve the monitoring of mechanical properties during the process, a material model has been developed that can now be run in parallel with the temperature control software. This model generates predictions of the final mechanical properties. The next step in improving the monitoring is to compare these predictions to a measurement, available at the end of the processing line.
Details of the assignment
The primary goal is to add the mechanical properties signal to the monitor, so that the prediction and the measurement can be compared in real time. This task requires adaptation of an existing C# code. Once available, data analysis of the predictions and measurements can be performed with the purpose of a) identifying potential inaccuracies in either the prediction or the measurement, and b) understanding the sensitivity of the mechanical properties (predicted as well as measured) to temperature variations.
Depending on the length of the internship, the assignment can be expanded to use this understanding to generate recommendations for temperature variations beforehand, so that mechanical properties can be improved for future products as well.
As an extra: affinity with metallurgy, control engineering and/or C# and mastering the Dutch language is nice to have.
You will work in the Thermal Processes knowledge group, which consists of about fifteen researchers from various backgrounds. Your work will typically consist of code development, but since the final application relies heavily on first principle process models, there is also room to explore some of the physics and metallurgy behind it.
