The requirement of steel for automotive and appliance sectors demands good formability and toughness, along with good surface quality. These demands are met through “interstitial free (IF)” steel grades, which necessitates controlling nitrogen to very low levels (~ 20-30 ppm). On the contrary, steel grades such as tin plate or high nitrogen martensitic steel (used in aerospace applications such as aviation turbine spindle bearing) require high hardness, strength and corrosion resistance, which is imparted by high levels of nitrogen (60-120 ppm).
The current Basic oxygen furnace (steels made by integrated route) is an excellent removal of N due to the strong stirring effect of CO gas produced by the reaction between the melt Carbon and supplied oxygen. However, in the future green steelmaking route with alternate source of hot metal other than BF, the composition of hot metal is expected to be different and in particular a lower concentration of Carbon is expected to impact the kinetics of N2 refining process. Therefore a good understanding of the N absorption and desorption kinetics is important to control the final N content in the steel grade.
The current research work aims to study the kinetics of N2 removal and develop a mathematical model to predict the N concentration in liquid steel during steelmaking operation. The study will make use of the samples obtained from a 6 ton pilot scale experimental converter data (Imphos study1) to validate the N prediction model. The objectives of the study are:
